Keep Your Smile Free From Enamel Erosion by Doing These Things

Posted .

You deserve the best oral health and smile possible. Unfortunately, there are things in the world today that can constantly threaten your teeth. One of those things is enamel erosion.

Enamel erosion is a common threat that develops when you consume acidic foods and beverages. The acid in the products attack the teeth and wear down the enamel. This makes the enamel weak and brittle, creating opportunity for cavities as well as tooth sensitivity to develop. To help you keep enamel erosion at bay, Dr. Lucy Gilbart & Roli Malla Joshi and our dental team have some recommendations for you.

First, limit your consumption of acidic foods and beverages. However, we understand you can’t cut these products out of your diet altogether. So, if you do eat those foods and drink those drinks, make sure to eat them with a meal rather than snack on them throughout the day. The other foods in your meal can neutralize the acid and reduce the effects of the erosion.

Second, wash the acidic chemicals away with water. We recommend that you sip on a glass of water while you are eating the foods that can wear away your teeth. This will help limit the time the acid is in your mouth.

Third, use a straw when you drink an acidic drink. This is beneficial because the beverage will pass through your mouth and skip the teeth altogether. This will limit the chances of the acid attacking your teeth. It’s also important to drink the beverage quickly instead of sipping on it throughout the day.

Fourth, wait for 30 minutes to brush your teeth after you have enjoyed an acidic food or drink. This is important because brushing too soon can cause more harm than good. Typically, the acid in the products wears down your tooth enamel. When you brush soon after, the bristles can also wear away the enamel.

If you use our tips, there is a good chance your chompers can remain healthy and strong. Do you have questions about how to prevent enamel erosion in Gaithersburg, Maryland? If so, please call Alluring Smiles today. We will be thrilled to give you the answers you seek!
